How do parents, food companies and schools influence the childhood obesity epidemic in America?
Food Companies:
1. What ways do you see food companies influencing children to eat unhealthy?
2. Is there any particular food company that stands out in your mind as a negative influence on children’s eating habits?
3. Are there any food companies that stand out in your mind as a positive influence on children’s eating habits?
4. How do you think food companies and food marketing in the past 30 years have influenced what children recognize as food? ( ex: Children don’t recognize certain foods like cherries as a fruit, instead they only recognize it as a flavor)
5. Studying more about food companies we have learned that most companies are focused on the amount of money they are making instead of the quality of the products they are producing. How do you think this has influenced childhood obesity?
6. Children are highly influenced by the commercials put on by food companies. Do you see these commercials as a contributing factor to the childhood obesity epidemic in America?
7. Have you seen any ways food companies are changing in order to promote healthier eating habits for children?
8. Do you know of any food companies that prove to be a positive influence on children’s eating habits?
9. Do you believe that food companies play a major part in the problem of childhood obesity in America today?
10. Fast food companies have recently made major changes to their menus to give children healthy alternatives such as apples instead of French fries. What do you think of these menu changes and do you think they are having a positive effect on children?
Schools:
1. Do you think the children are getting enough education on eating health and fitness?
2. How early on in school do you think children should be exposed to physical fitness and good eating habits?
3. Do you think its appropriate to expose the children to "real life" dangers of obesity? (ex. diabetes)
4. In regards to question three do you feel elementary students would be mature enough to understand the health dangers of it?
5. What do you feel is better school lunch or packing lunch?
6. Do you feel economically its cheaper for schools to use "junk food"?
7. What do you feel is cheaper for parents school lunches or packing lunches?
8. Do you feel gym classes are challenging the students physically enough?
Parents:
1. How at fault do you feel parents are for their child’s obesity?
2. Do you feel low income parents have a good argument when they say “I don’t have the money to feed my family healthy food?”
3. I read many articles on how many doctors are anxious to bring up obesity in children to the parents. How would you go about telling a parent their child is obese?
4. What is the best way to transition a child from junk food to health food?
5. When do you think parents should start initiating health eating habits to their children?
6. How often do think children should eat fast food?
